From Judy
We last met live at our 50th Lycee class reunion dinner in NYC (you posted a picture!) She looked fabulous, I remember a pair of ever-so stylish white pants… She and I sat next to each other. It was wonderful to catch up. It had been, what, ten, twenty, thirty years? The next day she was slated to meet Philippe Soriano to go bird watching at 7 AM. I thought, amazing! Her energy seemed boundless. She told me about Portugal and urged me to visit. I brought with me a lovely leather-bound book of yours about the Nile which had followed me from Pennsylvania to New Mexico to New York for 30 years and which, every time it caught my eye on the bookshelf, reminded me of Marguey and the need to get the book back.
We didn’t see a lot of each other as adults. As kids we had met daily at the Lycee. We had lunch in the park. And we played. With Kem. And Mary. Marguey was always so composed and yet with a mischievous wild streak. We made brownies in Mrs. Yates kitchen. The house was full of fun and activity and freedom. I still have a photo of us in Central Park – must have been a birthday party-my brother is at the helm of the rowboat and the girls are romping around. We were lucky not to capsize.
As young adults living in Paris we saw each other a few times. You both came over for dinner. Marguey attended a performance of one my plays. I was so pleased by her kindness. It meant so much to me. Years later she made a point of sending postcards from her travels. She was a friend anchored so far back.
Kem had daughters. Marguey and I had sons.
In the early 90’s after I moved back to the US, we met up in the Poconos. Perhaps that is how the Nile book ended up on my bookshelf… I’m so happy I finally got it back to her that wonderful evening in 2021. I looked forward to visiting her one day in Portugal, to her coming here to the farm and pursuing our friendship.
